Turner shooting: More details
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:15:40 AM »

We confirmed late Sunday that Ohio State football signee Jamel Turner was shot over the weekend in his hometown of Youngstown. More details finally were available this morning, courtesy of this report on the WYTV Channel 33 website in Youngstown:
"A former local football standout, who has committed to play for Ohio State this Fall, says he was struck by gunfire in Youngstown.

"According to police reports, Jamel Turner was traveling south on Interstate 680 late Friday night, when near the Williamson street exit, he claims he was hit by gunfire in his ankle and right hip.

"It's believed the injuries to the former Ursuline standout weren't serious and shouldn't affect his playing status. Turner left Ursuline after his Junior season to attend Fork Union Military Academy.

"A bag of marijuana and two handguns were found in the car Turner was riding in.
A total of three people were said to be traveling with Turner, including Jamel's twin brother. No one was seriously hurt."

Sources have told The Dispatch that Ohio State officials are looking into the incident, as would be expected. Turner has a troubled past. It includes him transferring from his previous high school, Youngstown Ursuline, to Fork Union for his senior season only to be kicked out of Fork Union for undisclosed reasons last month.

OSU coach Jim Tressel said earlier this month that Turner was working to complete his high school work needed for graduation -- it's believe he is taking correspondence courses -- and that he was still considered a member of the 2010 recruiting class.

Police report adds Turner details

The Youngstown police report reveals that OSU recruit Jamel Turner, 18, was indeed shot in the lower left ankle and right hip in the incident, which occurred Friday night shortly after 11 p.m..

He was a back-seat passenger in the Chevrolet Blazer driven by a 32-year-old Youngstown man, Ramses Terry. The third person in the car was Jamal Turner, Jamel's twin brother.

According to all three men, they were southbound on Interstate 680 in Youngstown when a black car, possibly with tinted windows, sped up next to them and several shots were fired.

Terry was also injured, in his left hand. Jamal Turner was not hit. The men drove to St. Elizabeth's Hospital and were treated in the emergency room.

As already reported, police found two handguns in the car, along with two bags containing suspected marijuana, and three white pills. The police listed those items as belonging to Terry, since he is the owner of the car.

The suspects are unknown, and a search of the shooting scene revealed no further evidence.

Ohio State recruit Jamel Turner was wounded in a shooting
late Friday night in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.

According to police reports, Turner was shot in his ankle
and hip while traveling in a car along Interstate 680.

His injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening. Turner
was the passenger in the car, and the driver also suffered
a gunshot wound to his hand.

WYTV Channel 33 in Youngstown reported that a bag
of marijuana and two handguns were found in the car
      Turner rode in.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the driver of
the car, 32-year-old Ramses Terry, has been arrested
several times for gun and drug crimes.

Turner, a defensive end who signed with Ohio State
in February, has a troubled past.

After being declared academically ineligible at Ursuline
High School in Youngstown, he transferred
to Fork Union Military Academy, only to be dismissed
      last month.

Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel said Turner has been
working to complete his high school degree so he
can enroll at Ohio State this summer.

Turner told the Ohio State blog Eleven Warriors last week
that he looked forward to a fresh start in Columbus.

Asked to give a message to Ohio State fans, Turner told
Eleven Wariors, "Don’t count me out, but count on me
because I’m hungry and I want it.

I won't fail the Buckeye Nation."
