Ex-NBA Player to Give Talk about Recovering from Addiction

November 25, 2015 - 12:00 AM

GAMBIER — Chris Herren, an NBA player who lost his dream because of drugs and alcohol, will speak at Kenyon College on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Herren, who realized his childhood wish of playing for his hometown team, the Boston Celtics, will share how his career unraveled and how he recovered in the talk open to the public at 11:10 a.m. in Rosse Hall Auditorium, 105 College Road.

An All-American, Herren broke scoring records, was recruited by top colleges, was featured in Sports Illustrated and became the focus of the book, “Fall River Dreams.”

Herren, who grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts, was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and was traded to the Celtics after his rookie season.

Sober and off drugs since 2008, he tells his story of abuse and recovery in his memoir, “Basketball Junkie,” and in numerous interviews throughout the Emmy-nominated ESPN Films documentary about him titled “Unguarded."
