All Utica Homecoming Festivities in Town have been Cancelled

By Timothy Perry

September 16, 2015 - 5:39 PM

The Utica Volunteer Fire Department has cancelled this year's Utica Homecoming festival in downtown Utica and all related events, including the parade, numerous contest, entertainment, and street fair after a threatening letter was received by the North Fork School District.

In a Facebook post, the Fire Department made the following announcement:

"IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS THAT WE ARE ANNOUNCING THAT THIS YEARS 2015 HOMECOMING FALL FESTIVAL IS CANCELLED IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

-UTICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT"

This is the first time the Homecoming Festival has been cancelled since World War Two.

The Utica High School Homecoming Football game has been rescheduled for Friday night at 9 PM at Denison University.

A letter sent home with students, which was written by Superintendent Scott Hartley on Tuesday, stated that the district received a threatening letter, which prompted them to contact the Utica Police Department, which is working with the FBI to investigate.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the school district contacted the police upon receipt of this letter,” Hartley wrote.

After consulting with the police and FBI, district officials decided to reschedule the school-related events.

“The school and police department are coordinating increased security measures and police presence at upcoming events.” Hartley went on to say in the letter.

All outside building doors will be locked during the school day.

District officials are declining to discuss the incident further because of the ongoing police and FBI investigations.
