Ohio Department of Natural Resources Releases Oil and Gas Production Numbers

August 29, 2015 - 3:56 PM

During the second quarter of 2015, Ohio’s horizontal shale wells produced 5,578,255 barrels of oil (bbls) and 221,860,169 Mcf (221 billion cubic feet) of natural gas, according to figures released today by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). These numbers break all previous production reporting records for the last 100 years. Production continues to rise as oil increased by more than 3.1 million barrels and gas by more than 133 billion cubic feet compared to the second quarter of 2014.

Totals (1st & 2nd QTR)   2014        2015      Increase year to year
Barrels of oil:            4,423,381     10,010,559             126%

Mcf of gas:            156,132,032     405,445,420           160%

These figures represent a 126 percent increase in oil production compared to the first half of last year while natural gas production rose 160 percent. For further comparison, only 11 million barrels of oil and 450 billion cubic feet of gas were produced in all of 2014.

The new report lists 1,020 wells, 978 of which reported production, an increase of 94 percent from the 504 wells reporting production halfway through 2014. Forty-two wells reported no production as they are waiting on pipeline infrastructure. Of the 978 wells reporting production results:

Totals (1st & 2nd QTR)   2014        2015     Increase year to year
Avg. oil produced:    4,904 bbls       5,704 bbls             16%

Avg. gas produced:  176,116 Mcf    226,851 Mcf          28%

Avg. days in production:  75               83                     10%

All horizontal production reports can be accessed at:oilandgas.ohiodnr.gov/production.

Ohio law does not require the separate reporting of Natural Gas Liquids (NGL). Gas reporting totals listed on the report include NGLs.
