Schnormeier Gallery Currently Hosting the Work of Mary Gaynier

PRESS RELEASE

Edited by Timothy Perry

July 31, 2015 - 5:00 PM

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene University's Schnormeier Gallery is currently hosting the work of Mary Gaynier. The exhibition is on display through August 12, 2015. A reception will take place on Friday, August 7, from 6 to 9 pm. This event and the subsequent exhibition in the gallery are free and open to the public.

Mary Gaynier's work is a contemporary expression of the traditional and culturally diverse art of Scherenschnitte, or cut paper. Employing rhythm, repetition, and an element of surprise, her pieces are meticulously detailed and entertaining narratives that invite viewers to come to their own imaginative conclusions.

Gaynier discovered her love for paper cutting by accident while crafting festive snowflakes in 2001. Since then, the simple hobby has developed into an art practice that brings together the abstract and the concrete, the subjective and the objective. From a distance, her designs are non-representational patterns; upon closer inspection, bustling city scenes or images of alien invasions emerge. If viewers are surprised by what they discover in Gaynier's pieces, she is often equally surprised by what emerges as she cuts them: her process is unpredictable, her designs taking on a life of their own as she removes sections of the paper. The unexpected element of Gaynier's pieces keeps the work fresh and exciting, both for the viewers and for herself.

Gaynier's paper cuts have received first place awards in the National Juried Competition, Works of Art in Cut Paper at the Long Beach Island Foundation of Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, New Jersey, and in the Mid-Atlantic Juried Art Exhibition at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

The Schnormeier Gallery is located at 221 S. Main Street in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 12 to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm. For more information, call 740-397-9000, ext. 3040.
