The Benefits of Listening to Music

By Katie Schultz

July 22, 2015 - 3:56 PM

Music is universal. It can create a mood, bond groups of people together, and listening to it can have many personal benefits.

Listening to certain music, like classical and instrumental, has been proven to lower blood pressure in a study by the American Society of Hypertension. It has also been proven that listening to cheerful music that is upbeat can decrease the symptoms of depression and improve a person's emotional state by reducing the amount of cortisol, the stress-related hormone, in the body.

Around 60 million Americans suffer from the sleep disorder, insomnia-  and music may help a person get a decent night of sleep. Classical music relaxes muscles, slows down the heart rate, and decreases anxiety. This can provide a serene environment where the mind isn't worrying and sleep might come faster.

Music can be beneficial academically as well. It is suggested that listening to the same music while studying improves cognition, increasing memory performance. It is also thought that students who actively engage in learning an instrument have a higher IQ and achieve academic success. This is due to their ability to process different sounds through learning an instrument, linking it to aiding in literacy.

Not able to focus? By listening to light classical music, productivity might be increased due to its ability to reduce stress and allow a person to focus intently on the task at hand. Plus, the aid of listening to relaxing music through headphones drowns out the surrounding noises.

Music is something many people would agree that they can not live without. With access to music easy to come by, allow yourself to get through your day a little easier with the aid of the right kind of sounds.

Yeh, music, sometimes it depends on the current prevailing moods, for example when you fall in love with someone, then be together in a private corner, you would always like to have a romantic song, e.g the all of me by John legend
