Community invited to MVNU Music Department spring concerts

April 12, 2016 - 12:14 PM

MOUNT VERNON — The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present three spring concerts that are free and open to the public.

The first concert will occur at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, in Thorne Performance Hall and will involve several of the smaller ensembles. Chamber Winds will present works that are all circus-themed. Flute Choir and Goliards Chamber Choir will both perform a variety of music. And Treble Singers Women's Choir will offer uplifting classics such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and selections from The Sound of Music.

The MVNU Jazz Band will present a casual evening of music at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in the Prince Student Union. The concert will feature a mix of big band music including Jazz, pop, and Broadway standards with special tributes to the late Natalie Cole and Maurice White by vocalists Mikey McPherson and Kendra Vosler.

Then the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Collegians Chorale will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The Wind Ensemble's program will include Gustav Holst's "Jupiter" conducted by senior Nicholas DeWalt, works by Alfred Reed and David Holsinger, and a saxophone solo featuring senior Audra Thomas. Collegians Chorale will present Z. Randall Stroope's dramatic work "Conversion of Saul," an engaging French folk song "J'entends le Moulin by Patriquin," and two very contrasting Kyrie movements, one from Palestrina's Missa Brevis, and the other from The High Lonesome Mass by Tim Sharp and Wes Ramsay performed in a bluegrass style incorporating the spiritual "Do Lord" with a bluegrass combo. The ensembles will collaborate on several selections as well, including "The Awakening" by Joseph Martin, and "The Lord's Prayer" by Albert Hay Malotte arranged by Bradley Knight.

These ensembles perform frequently on campus and in various off-campus venues. Members represent a variety of academic majors and denominational backgrounds.
