Local Officers Receive Awards for Actions that Resulted in Herschel Jones III Arrest

These officers received awards for their efforts on the night of January 18, 2016, which resulted in the capture of Herschel Jones III, who is currently facing murder charged in the death of Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell

MOUNT VERNON - On May, 10, 2016, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office recognized four officers for their actions that resulted in the capture of Herschel Jones III on January 18, 2016.

Officers were investigating the shooting death of Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell.

Jones fled a residence on East Washington Street in Danville and after a foot chase, was arrested a short distance away near the football field.

Sheriff David Shaffer presented the Office Citation award to Deputies Kevin Durbin, Lee Eppich, Brandon Minot, and Danville Chief Dan Weckesser. The award is for outstanding performance of a difficult task, involving personal risk to the officer’s safety and because of their actions the perpetrator was apprehended
