MOUNT VERNON — Three professors and one staff member have retired from Mount Vernon Nazarene University this year. All four individuals were honored during a chapel service on Wednesday. MVNU is grateful for their years of service and will be greatly missed by the School of Natural and Social Sciences, the Jetter School of Business, the Facilities Management Department, and the School of Arts and Humanities, respectively.

"The investment that you have made over these years into the lives of men and women that have crossed your path is significant, and for some of us, there is an eternal return on that investment. We're grateful for this opportunity to have you present so we can celebrate what you've done," said Joe Noonen, Vice President for Student Life and University Chaplain at MVNU.

Dr. Karen Doenges, Professor of Mathematics, has retired from her position after 25 years. Dr. Doenges previously spent 17 years in the public school system teaching French and mathematics. She has also participated in the Council of Christian Colleges and University (CCCU) "Women in Leadership" program. She was tapped by the Church of the Nazarene to lead its Faith and Learning Conference, convened at MVNU in 2001. In addition, Dr. Doenges and her husband, Steve, have been advisors for Mu Kappa.

Mr. Daryl Gruver, Associate Professor of Business, has retired from his position after 40 years. Mr. Gruver has been on the Global Mission and Ministry Committee, traveled and worked with ENACTUS students, and Delta Mu Delta students. Prior to his work at MVNU, Gruver was Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Bethel College, and served as a personnel specialist in the U.S. Army in Mannheim, Germany.

Mr. Dennis Hoffman, Campus Electrician, has retired from his position after 32 years. Mr. Hoffman has worked in every building on campus at one time or another. Mr. Hoffman has pulled wire from the radio tower to the new WNZR radio station in Founders Hall, has cleaned the Reflection Pond over 25 times, has dug trenches for electric, telephone, and Internet wires; has been in charge of setting up the electric for events like SonFest, The Messiah, baccalaureate, commencement, and other celebrations in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. Mr. Hoffman has rung the Shaw Bell over 1,000 times for graduations and other events.

Dr. Paul Mayle, Professor of History, has retired from his position after 41 years. Dr. Mayle has led numerous academic and Work and Witness trips overseas to places like Hungary on behalf of MVNU. Dr. Mayle has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program grant for the 2016-17 academic year, and will be spending the 2017 spring semester at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, teaching two classes and completing a research project.
